Stormy skies over Mount Vernon, MO

These photos are from a large storm I ran into on my way to Joplin. I had stopped at a rest stop about 50 miles east of Joplin and checked the weather report on the National Weather Service website. It looked like Joplin was getting hammered again and a storm was headed straight for me. When it cleared I continued on. When I hit Mount Vernon the skies became amazing, so I had to pull off the interstate and try to photograph it. The storm ended up circling over me. It made for a great photo op. Back to Storm …

Photos from Joplin, MO

These photos were taken on May 27, 2011 in Joplin, MO. I am going to jump forward a little on my photos since this is current events. I drove to Joplin today to see if Buddy could offer any comfort to the victims of their tornado and to donate some items I got from a waitress at Uncle Monkey’s in Illiopolis, IL and Tanya, along with a barbecue I happened to have with me. After spending some time at SMU with victims and volunteers, and dropping off the stuff with the Salvation Army, we took a drive through the area …

Photos from a day in New Mexico

These photos were taken at Bayard, Hurley, City of Rocks, Las Cruces, White Sands, Roswell and Portales, NM. They were having lots of fires in the forest at the border, and the heavy wind was mixing the smoke and sand so that visibility was terrible throughout most of the state. After leaving AZ we visited Bayard and Hurley, then stumbled up the City of Rocks. It was a very cool place as it is surrounded bu flat desert then the city of rocks pops up. We stopped for lunch in Las Cruces, which was great. As we headed to Roswell, …

Photos from 4th Amendment protest in Indy

A couple of weeks ago, the Indiana State Supreme Court ruled on the appeal of Barnes v. State of Indiana. While it should have been an extremely simple case to rule on (Barnes was guilty), the Supreme Court decided that they wanted to use this case as an excuse to essentially overturn the Fourth Amendment of the US Constitution. Not only did they say that Barnes was guilty, but they decided that the police do not need to have a reason to enter homes in the Hoosier State. They said if the cops enter your house illegally, you are free …

Photos from the Gila National Forest

Waking up in Springerville, I realized that I had been on the road for two days and had yet to leave Arizona. That had to change. As we headed towards New Mexico we went through the Gila National Forest. It was a very windy day which made for some very clear skies around us. I could see that we were probably going to be headed towards some large forest fires as there was a lot of smoke mixing with the dust in the distance. Photos from the Painted Desert

After leaving the meteor crater we headed towards the Painted Desert. The Painted Desert is the entry to Arizona’s Petrified Forest National Park. Since the day was drawing to a close and I have visited several petrified forests in the past, I decided that we would skip this one and just enjoy the beauty of the Painted Desert. I have seen it from the opposite side, but it was nowhere near as nice as this. After photographing the Painted Desert we headed on to Springerville, where we enjoyed a great meal at the Safire Restaurant & Lounge. They make most …

Photos from Meteor Crater, Arizona

These photos are from the Meteor Crater by Meteor City, AZ. This giant hole in the ground was created about 50,000 years ago when a meteor crashed into the Earth at an estimated 26,000 miles per hour. It is pretty amazing when you look at the size of the crater and think about what kind of devastation it must have caused at the time. One moment you are surrounded by forests, then vast expanses of nothing. It was very windy, with gusts up to 70 MPH, which the locals say is the norm. Back to Meteor Crater Photos Back to …

Photos from the Walnut Canyon National Monument

Monday we woke up to a windy morning in Flagstaff, AZ. After a quick breakfast and finding the local Starbucks, we hit the road. My uncle had stated a desire to visit Roswell, NM, so I headed gradually south as we went east. Along the way, we came across the Walnut Canyon National Monument Cliff Dwellings. My girlfriend and I have seen cliff dwellings in a few places, including Mesa Verde in Colorado, but these were cool in that you could easily walk down to some of them and check them out, up close. Photos from Mother’s Day in Arizona

My uncle and I decided to take a little drive today. We stayed on I-40 most of the day, as I have not really driven it since the late 1980’s. It was a really nice day with just the right amount of cloud cover to make interesting shadows on the mountains and the desert is blooming nicely. We ended up in Flagstaff, AZ. It was too dark to get photos of it by the time we got here, so these photos are from Ludlow and Kingman, AZ. Return to Mother’s Day Photos Return to Mother’s Day Photos

Photos from the Jenny Krebs fundraiser

Long time El Segundo resident, Jennifer Krebs, was recently diagnosed with stage three cancer. Since she will be starting chemo therapy soon, and El Segundo being the tight knit community it is, friends and family threw a fundraiser Friday night at Harry O’s. A small donation at the door was requested with all proceeds going towards Krebs’ medical costs. Entertainment was provided by Hoist the Colors, which I can only describe as an Irish folk/rock band. There was a silent auction and a donation bucket that was passed along all evening. Judging by the smiles it appeared that everyone was …
