Mooneyes Mother\’s Day Show & Drags

Regular readers of GotBaddog may recall that since 2010 I have been attending and photographing the Mooneyes Christmas Party, Car Show & Drag Races at Irwindale Speedway. This past December the weather did the unthinkable by raining out the event; if you can imagine rain in December. As a result, Mooneyes rescheduled the event for Saturday, May 10 and renamed it the Mooneyes Mother\’s Day Show & Drags. Even though I had other plans, I decided to stop by Irwindale to check out the morning action.

The first thing I noticed was that there was a much smaller crowd that I have ever seen at the Christmas Show; so much smaller that the parking situation which usually causes the most complaints was not an issue at all. As I made my way through the car show to the drag strip it suddenly dawned on me that I had forgotten to bring my ear protection. As I usually like to get situated a little ways down from the staging lights I decided my ears would survive without them. After I signed my waiver and prepared to get situated I was informed that things were different this year and photographers had to stay in one small area right by the staging lanes. To those unfamiliar, this is where the cars typically do their burnouts to make the tires sticky; it is also about the loudest place one can stand. After one of the first cars hit a wall it caused a fairly significant delay while debris was removed from the track; the next set of cars that staged were far too loud for my unprotected ears and I decided that I was not going to be able to get the shots I wanted so I called it a day. Street Toys Car Show at Alpine Village Oktoberfest

Sunday afternoon I headed over to Alpine Village in Torrance for the Street Toys Back to School Car Show which was held in conjunction with Alpine Village\’s Oktoberfest. Sunday is family day at Oktoberfest so there were lots of families wandering around admiring the artwork on the show entries.

From my understanding, Street Toys is governing body as it were for the local car clubs; so this event included many different car clubs covering a wide spectrum of car styles with trophies for every class. They had 2-door cars, 4-door cars, mini-trucks, full sized trucks, imports, classics, motorcycles and anything else you can think of. The car show was a fundraiser to help provide back to school necessities for underprivileged students throughout the Los Angeles Unified School District. Street Toys and all the participants should be congratulated for holding a successful event for a good cause.

Alpine Village is located at 833 W. Torrance Boulevard in Torrance. Their 46th Annual Oktoberfest runs every weekend through October with Friday and Saturday evenings being adults (21+) only and Sunday afternoons being open to all. You can find my Oktoberfest photos on CraftBeerGuy.com. Continue reading

Third Annual Rod & Kustom BBQ Photos

On Saturday, the CrossMembers Hot Rod Fellowship held their Third Annual Rod & Kustom BBQ at the Restoration Life Christian Church in Lawndale. This was a fundraising event with a car and bike show, [outstanding] live music, and a barbecue. In addition there were a few vendors there and they held a raffle with 100% of the proceeds going to Hands of Hope: Mission Ethiopia. Hands of Hope: Mission Ethiopia provides water purification and well digging services as well as humanitarian relief to the Afar people of Ethiopia. They are attempting to raise $40,000 to purchase a new hydraulic well digging rig which will reach a depth of 300 feet to access clean water far beneath the surface. For more information email hotrodfellowship@hotmail.com or call (310) 973-5059.

I had been informed about the event because of my association with the Original Sinner Motorcycle Club\’s Meetup group, the Original Sinners Riding Club. If you ride and are looking for some people to ride with, you should check them out. Bikes of every style are welcomed; this is not part of the motorcycle club, so if you do not want to wear a patch, that is not an issue. After checking out the car and bike show we headed up to Point Fermin and met up with the Sinners at Walker\’s Cafe, a popular location overlooking the Palos Verdes Peninsula coastline. I used the opportunity to take two bikes out on the same day; it was a good day. Continue reading

Photos of Mooneyes Xmas Party, Show & Drag, 2012

Saturday, December 8, 2012 was the annual Mooneyes Christmas Party, Car show and Drag Races at Irwindale Dragstrip. I am not really sure how long they have been having this event; but I have been photographing it since 2010. It is a fun event. The car show is limited to pre-1965 model years; and the drag races are limited to pre-1969 model years. In addition, there was a Pinup Girl contest, tons of vendors selling everything you could want to customize your hot rod or fuzzy dice for your lowrider as well as food and drink. Live music was provided by Gambler’s Mark, Dead Beat Daddy, Hot Rod Trio and Dynotones.

The weather was great and the crowd all seemed to be enjoying themselves immensely; I know I did and I look forward to next year\’s event. Continue reading

Alpine Village hosts benefit concert and car show

These photos are from Sunday at Alpine Village in Torrance, where they hosted a benefit concert and a classic car and bike show. The concert had four bands, with headliners The Fabulous Thunderbirds and three bands from Wild Records; The Rhythm Shakers, The Delta Bombers and The Neumans. I guess I am getting old because the definition of a \”classic\” was 1992 or earlier. As you can see from the photos, the cars that showed up were indeed classics. The music was definitely classic. The crowd was small, but everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and that is really what it is all about. Having a good time while doing something good for others. Continue reading

Mooneyes 2011 Christmas Party and Car Show

These photos are from the 2011 Mooneye\’s Christmas party and custom car show. This annual event was held Saturday December 10, 2011 at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale. This is a true custom car show with all cars being pre-1965. This is a fun event for the entire family and a true visual experience as the car owners obviously put in a tremendous amount of effort and love to turn out the vehicles displayed. Continue reading

Mooneye\’s Christmas Drags 2010

Irwindale, CA

As a part of the Mooneye\’s Christmas Party and car show, they also had drag races on the 1/8 mile strip. The best part of this event was that all the racers were pre-1969 vehicles only. They had some rail dragsters on display and they fired them up, but the track is not really long enough for that kind of action. It was fun watching them and practicing my action photography.

Mooneye\’s Christmas Party 2010

Irwindale, CA

Last year, a friend of mine from up north came into town for the Mooneye\’s Christmas Party Car Show and Drags. As it was cold and raining, I did not bother going out there. I had heard that there was a decent turnout, but the rain put a damper on things, literally. This year was exactly the opposite. It was a beautiful 80 degree day out at Irwindale. There were loads of nice bikes and cars and lots of people. It was a great day to be in Southern California.
