Day four of our journey began in Miles City and a beautiful morning. The storm clouds looked fantastic and made for great photos. As we headed across on I-94 I spotted a sign for the Little Big Horn battleground, so we made our first detour of the day. The signs were not very accurate, but due to another u-turn we soon came upon it. One thing my cousin and I both noticed was how solemn people seemed to be there. After leaving the meteor crater we headed towards the Painted Desert. The Painted Desert is the entry to Arizona’s Petrified Forest National Park. Since the day was drawing to a close and I have visited several petrified forests in the past, I decided that we would skip this one and just enjoy the beauty of the Painted Desert. Our last day in Utah, we decided that we would go ahead and venture into Arches National Park. We had visited it last year, but Tanya’s storage drive failed and she lost a significant number of the photos she took. Since there was a threat or rain, the clouds were moving in; and while clouds can add an interesting perspective to photos, they also dampen the bright colors that might otherwise be available. I am not really sure what happened. The last I heard, we were going to Arches National Park. After all, that is why we stayed in Moab. Right? Apparently not. I guess Tanya was surfing Google images after we got settled in. She found a couple places we had not yet seen that appeared to be quite photogenic. The fact that it was a four hour drive each way mattered little. One of the locations was Natural Bridges National Monument. Discovered in 1883, it is Utah’s first National Monument. As we continued towards the Grand Canyon, we were given two options. Grand Canyon Village or Desert View. I did not know where I wanted to go. Desert View sounded cool, so I took the turn fully anticipating to go a few miles, then backtrack to Grand Canyon Village. As it turned out, the turn towards Desert View was definitely the right way to go. We just followed the road all the way around the park. Video of the climb up Generals Highway in Sequoia National Park. This was taken on my ride there last Sunday. It was very cool as every time I went around a turn you could see just how high the road was climbing, and it provided a spectacular view. While I would have enjoyed having my girlfriend with me, I have a feeling her fear of heights would have resulted in her fingernails being permanently embedded in either me or the back seat of the Limited. Filmed with a ContourHD helmet cam.

Riding in the Giant Forest

As I mentioned the other day, I took a ride on the new H-D Limited to Sequoia National Park. Besides being home to Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the lower 48 states, beautiful rivers and bears, you will also find some of the oldest and largest trees on the planet. This video, taken with my ContourHD helmet cam, is of my ride through the Giant Forest. I do recommend clicking the settings for 720 and full screen. It is a pretty amazing place.

Road Trip Photos [adrotate group=”6″] Mesa Verde National Park Today’s photos are of Mesa Verde National Park. It is known for having some of the best preserved cliff dwellings that the Pueblo people used for 700 years. That is some endurable construction! It was cool seeing things that I have only seen pictures of. We needed to put some miles on, and we spent longer than anticipated at Mesa Verde, so we headed to Gallup, NM to hole up for the night.
