Torrance Civic Chorale performs for City Council

In my attempt to become more aware of what is happening within the City of Torrance and to be more involved in the civic process, I have started attending the weekly Torrance City Council meetings as frequently as possible. This past Tuesday, December 10, the Torrance Civic Chorale came and sang a few holiday songs to the city council, other attendees and television viewers. In addition to entertaining us, the purpose was to bring awareness to the Torrance Civic Chorale’s upcoming concert series, Spirit of the Season, which will be presented Friday, December 13, and Saturday, December 14 at 8:00 …

One last Champagne Brunch at the Proud Bird

Last week my Facebook feed lit up with the news that the Proud Bird Restaurant, an aviation-themed restaurant by Los Angeles International Airport for 48 years, will be closing effective November 21, 2013. Apparently they are closing because the landlords, Los Angeles World Airports, want to increase the rent to such an extent that the restaurant cannot afford to stay open. As the Proud Bird and I go back about 35 years and Tanya and I had been talking about going to a champagne brunch anyway, we decided that we would go for one last brunch at the Proud Bird …

Get to the Choppers at Ed’s Stumble Inn

These photos are from Saturday afternoon at Ed’s Stumble Inn where they hosted TJ Brutal Customs’ First Annual Get to the Choppers Inaugural Bike Show and Charity Raffle. The fundraiser benefited Vision2Victory, a 501(c)(3) charity that gives back to the military community. The centerpiece of the event was the raffle for a custom Honda motorcycle built by TJ Stiles; with paint by Department of Customz, handlebars by Noise Cycles, leather work by Lower Class Leather, a gas tank by Paughco, grips and pegs by Hippy Killer and a fender by Lowbrow Customs, with the velocity stack and custom exhaust by …

Torrance Annual Halloween Carnival

As I mentioned a couple months ago, I volunteered to help give the Torrance Rose Float Association (TRFA) some additional exposure to assist them in their fundraising efforts so the City of Torrance can be represented at the next Tournament of Roses Parade. A couple nights ago I heard that the TRFA needed volunteers to run their booth at the 2013 Torrance Annual Halloween Carnival, so Tanya stepped up to take care of their booth for a couple hours. Judging by the photos, she had as much fun as the kids playing the game. The City of Torrance no longer …

LA River Rally for Alternative 20

These photos were taken at Marsh Park in Los Angeles on Saturday morning at a rally for the Los Angeles River revitalization project; specifically Alternative 20. The event was attended by maybe 100 supporters that came to listen to LA City council members and check out exhibits showing the vision behind the revitalization of properties along the LA River corridor in accordance with the Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan. I became interested in this project due to my participation in a Kickstarter project for Dry River Brewing; as they envision having their brewery along the shores of the LA …

Street Toys Car Show at Alpine Village Oktoberfest

Sunday afternoon I headed over to Alpine Village in Torrance for the Street Toys Back to School Car Show which was held in conjunction with Alpine Village’s Oktoberfest. Sunday is family day at Oktoberfest so there were lots of families wandering around admiring the artwork on the show entries. From my understanding, Street Toys is governing body as it were for the local car clubs; so this event included many different car clubs covering a wide spectrum of car styles with trophies for every class. They had 2-door cars, 4-door cars, mini-trucks, full sized trucks, imports, classics, motorcycles and anything …

Meatballs & Bingo fundraiser for the Torrance Rose Float Association

Last night, the Torrance Rose Float Association (TRFA) held a fundraiser, Meatballs & Bingo, at the Order Sons of Italy in America hall in Torrance. The event was held to help raise the money required to enter a float in the 2014 Tournament of Roses Parade and featured a spaghetti dinner then some rousing games of Bingo with potential door prizes for the winners. I have to admit, I have never played Bingo beyond the standard game we used to play as children. I had no idea that Bingo had so many variations, but there are many and several of …

Pat Furey for Mayor fundraiser at Outback Steakhouse

Tuesday afternoon, August 20, the South Bay and Los Angeles area business owners and professionals held a fundraiser for Torrance Councilman Pat Furey’s campaign for Mayor of the City of Torrance at the Outback Steakhouse, who donated the food. Those that attended were treated to some very good food to go along with the networking and obligatory speeches. In addition to the business owners and professionals in attendance, Pat Furey was introduced by Congresswoman Maxine Waters, who was accompanied by her husband, Ambassador Sidney Williams. There were also several officials from surrounding cities like Lomita, Hawthorne and Lawndale in attendance …

Saturday at the Torrance Farmers Market

There has been a lot of healthy activity in our household lately, and not just Tanya’s miraculous change in her well-being; we have also recently released a book of juicing recipes, “Faces of Juicing, Visual Juicing Recipes.” When the book was released Tanya suggested that she wanted to go on a juice fast; I just tried to change the subject when she brought it up. Since Tanya has recently learned that most of her health issues appeared to be the result of a profound Vitamin B7 deficiency, otherwise known as Biotinidase Deficiency, she started taking Biotin a week ago and …
