The Kings Win the 2012 Stanley Cup

The Los Angeles Kings have won the 2012 Stanley Cup; the first time they have accomplished this since the franchise was founded way back in 1967. I decided to head over to Staples Center after I was convinced that I could not jinx their chances, and even though New Jersey scored about two minutes after I headed out, it was not enough to stop the Kings as they skated on to a 6-1 victory. While I was relatively confident there would be no issues with crowd control, I parked about a good half-mile away (behind LAPD’s staging area) which turned …

Photos from the 4th Annual PV Teen Night

These photos were taken Friday night at the 4th Annual PV Teen Night; which was held in conjunction with the 25th Annual Palos Verdes Street Fair & Music Festival. The street fair itself did not begin until Saturday, but all the carnival rides and food vendors were set up and ready to go Friday while the rest of the vendors, stages and tents were being worked on, most likely throughout the night. Friday night was limited just to the kids and proceeds from the ticket sales went to benefit local schools on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The kids did not …

A return visit to Monkish Brewing and Strand Brewing

As a result of our participation and documentation of the American Craft Beer Week in May, we became aware of several new local craft brewers, two of which are Monkish Brewing and Strand Brewing Company, both of which are located in Torrance. For me personally, one of the greatest advantages of micro breweries is that there is a pretty regular rotation of the taps; that being there is always something new to be found. Since I was in the general neighborhood, I decided to stop by Monkish Brewing Company as I recalled Henry, owner and brewer, mention that he was …

Torrance Kiwanis Texas Hold ’em Charity Poker Tournament

These photos were taken Sunday at the Torrance Kiwanis annual Texas Hold ’Em Charity Poker Tournament; which was held at the Palos Verdes Bowl in Torrance, CA. This is one of the Torrance Kiwanis biggest fundraisers of the year, so it was good to see the large turnout. In addition to the poker, there was a silent auction that included such items as tickets to an Angel’s game, bowling, Patron tequila and Dom Perignon champagne. Truly something for everyone. The Kiwanis are a service club with about 8,000 chapters in 96 countries, with the mission: “To serve children of the …

Watch Party, Game 2 of the 2012 Stanley Cup at ESPN Zone

These photos were taken at the Watch Party of Game Two of the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals held at the ESPN Zone at L.A. Live, across from the Staples Center. My son and his family are big Los Angeles Kings fans and since the Kings have never lost a championship game they attended, they decided to make the 100 miles (each way) ride to see if watching the game from across the street from Staples would help or not. Apparently it did, as the Los Angeles Kings defeated the New Jersey Devils 2-1 in overtime. Anyway, my daughter drove out …

Ribbon Cutting at Coworking Plus, Torrance

Thursday afternoon we joined the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce for another ribbon cutting ceremony, this time at Coworking Plus, located at 2293 W. 190th St. in Torrance. From what I gather, Coworking Plus is owned by the same people that own Business Team, which is a business for sale brokerage. Apparently, from working closely with small business owners, startups and at home businesses, it was determined that there was a market for office space that could be rented by the day or week as well as for months and years. I have to admit, it is a pretty good …

Division II, Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade

These photos are of Division II till the end, of the 2012 Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade. These photos begin with the North High School Saxon Regiment and Color Guard. Parade entries include several ROTC and JROTC’s; as well as Navy and Coast Guard floats. My alma mater, Bishop Montgomery, returned to the parade with one of the more entertaining high school marching bands I have seen in a while. Also included in this group of photos are the Torrance Torrettes and the 1st North Carolina Cavalry Civil War Re-enactors. The watermark was donated to the Rheumatoid Patient Foundation, the …

Photos from the Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade, Division One

As I have far too many photos from the Torrance 53rd Annual Armed Forces Day Parade, I have broken the photos up into three groups. The first group included arriving dignitaries and the Prologue Division of the parade; these photos are from Division I which encompasses parade entries 13-44. This includes the swearing in of the Air Force cadets, the West High School marching band, a couple flyovers and some military hardware. The watermark was donated to my favorite charity, the Rheumatoid Patient Foundation, the only charity just for people with Rheumatoid Autoimmune Disease otherwise known as Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Photos from Mayor Scotto’s 2012 State of the City Address

Thursday afternoon, Mayor Frank Scotto gave his 2012 State of the City Address at the Marriott Hotel in Torrance, CA. It was a very well attended event that included not only Mayor Scotto’s State of the City Address, but also included a presentation of the Torrance Citizen of the Year Award to Chef Michael Shafer, owner of The Depot restaurant in Torrance; as well as a special award to Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) President and CEO, Donna Duperron to recognize her involvement and work with the Chamber and the City of Torrance. As this was a part of …

53rd Annual Armed Forces Day Parade in Torrance – Dignitaries and Prologue

These photos were taken Saturday at the 53rd Annual Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade. Torrance is one of the few cities in the United States that has an Armed Forces Day Parade and they have been doing it longer and better than anyone. I read somewhere that this is the largest Armed Forces Day Parade west of the Mississippi River. Since it is the biggest, that means I got a ton of photos; so many that it would be difficult to navigate through all of them if you are looking for something specific. As a result, I am going to …
