Whale watching at Point Vicente

Every year at this time, California gray whales migrate down the coast of California to Baja and their breeding grounds. The other day I read that there were a record number of sightings, so Tanya and I took a drive up to the Point Vicente Interpretive Center in Rancho Palos Verdes to see if we could photograph some as they swam by. I managed to get a couple of shots, but as the sun was setting the glare on the water made it a little difficult to spot them and get the shot before they went under water again. It …

The floats of the 123rd Tournament of Roses Parade

These photos are exclusively of the floats in the 123rd Annual Tournament of Roses Parade. I had attempted to put all the photos from the event in one gallery, but that just made it too difficult for the viewer to sort through. As a result I now have two galleries; this one with all the floats and my previous Rose Parade blog entry which contains photos of the marching bands, drill teams, equestrian units and some people watching. Like the prior Rose Parade gallery, since there are so many photos, you might find it easier to use the slideshow function …

123rd Tournament of Roses Parade photos

Happy New Year! Yes, it is 2012 and so far, it is starting off with a bang. A tradition for the past 123 years has been the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA which is normally held on New Years Day. Since New Years fell on a Sunday this year and the parade has a “Never on a Sunday” rule, it was held on Monday. The theme for this year’s parade was “Just Imagine” and as you can see by looking at the photos of the floats, there was a lot of imagination put into their design. This was …

Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band at Staples Center

I had the opportunity to see Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band at Staples Center last night. It was a great concert. I have been a Bob Seger fan since Ramblin Gamblin Man, which was around 1969. I have seen close to 100 live acts, but for some reason I never made it to a Seger concert. To say that I was looking forward to last night would be an understatement. The song I was looking forward to hearing performed live was Turn the Page. He waited until almost the end to play it, so I was getting a …

2011 Operation Jack Marathon Photos

Today was the second annual Operation Jack Marathon in Manhattan Beach, CA. My daughter has gotten into long distance running lately, so I decided to come down and shoot the event. Operation Jack was started by a marathon runner, Sam, that has a son, Jack, with severe autism. Sam decided to run for autism awareness and hopefully to raise some funds for charities such as Train 4 Autism. You can get more details on their site. There are over 1,000 photos in this gallery, so the easiest way to view the photos is to put on the slideshow option. Once …

Christmas Dinner 2011

After our morning motorcycle ride, Tanya and I headed home to prepare to go to my dad’s for Christmas dinner. Tanya fixed her famous strawberry-pecan summer salad and I picked up a few bottles of wine from my Sort This Out Cellars stash. We then packed the car, loaded up the dogs and headed to my dad’s. Besides a couple brothers and a sister, there were my dad’s friends and friends of friends. I guess there were close to 20 people by the time all was said and done. As you can tell by the photos, we had a wide …

Christmas morning bike ride

Regular readers to this blog have probably figured out that I have a few Christmas traditions that may not be your typical Norman Rockwell Christmas scenario. Of course, Norman Rockwell did not live by the Southern California beaches, so that might have something to do with it. Of all the traditions I have, the one that probably goes back the furthest is my Christmas morning bike ride. These are photos from that ride. Since there are several shopping malls by me and the streets have been packed since Thanksgiving, I take advantage of the fact that the streets are virtually …

Torrance is ready for Christmas

Tanya and I decided to take a drive around Torrance last night, and check out the Christmas lights in some of the smaller neighborhoods. Not every area is going to be as dressed up as the Sleepy Hollow area of Torrance, but it seemed that any street you turn on will have several homes decorated in the holiday spirit. These photos are of some of those homes.

Torrance Police Officers Association escorts Santa

’Twas a couple weeks before Christmas, when all through the pad We were hanging in the kitchen, for dinner was to be had; The roast was sliced and the wine I did pour, The dogs looking up as if to implore; Please drop some scraps right here on the floor; When out in the street there arose such a clatter, I grabbed my camera and went out to see what was the matter. David Mann Chopperfest 2011

These photos were taken Sunday, December 11, 2011 at the 8th Annual David Mann Chopperfest, held at the Ventura County Fairgrounds in Ventura, CA. Chopperfest is dedicated to the life and memory of David Mann, arguably the most influential designer in the custom motorcycle world. Besides a bike show that includes some of the most beautiful motorcycles around, there was a motorcycle swap meet, vendors with food, beer, accessories and clothing, music provided by the Bob Carrillo Band and a roller derby exhibition by the Sugartown Rollergirls. Contrary to what you might think, this was fun for the entire family.
