American Craft Beer Week: Redondo Beach

The 7th annual American Craft Beer Week continues and we visited two more local craft beer suppliers; Select Beer Store and Redondo Beach Brewing Company, both located in the Riviera Village area of Redondo Beach. While I was readily familiar with Redondo Beach Brewing Company, I only became aware of Select Beer Store last weekend when we visited Strand Brewing Company and the beer-tender, Bonnie, informed us that Strand Brewing would be featured at Select Beer Store as part of American Craft Beer Week. Select Beer advertises that they stock more than 350 bottles and twelve rotating taps of American craft and imported beers. Since it is American Craft Beer Week, Select Beer had a South Bay Tap Takeover featuring El Segundo Brewing, Monkish, Strand Brewing and Smog City. While they do not offer flights, they did offer half pours so we were able to try a few different brews. The downside of that is that the beers we liked the best were not available “to go.” Oh well, guess we will have to return.

Since Select Beer Store does not offer food, we headed around the corner to Redondo Beach Brewing Company for some more tastings and some good food. As I mentioned above, I have been familiar with Redondo Beach Brewing Company for a while and that is why I had no hesitation in adding them to the local brewers I would visit this week. Redondo Beach Brewing Company currently has six different brews going; most of which I had tried previously, but the Belgian Winter Wheat was a new one for me and it was amazing. I think I may be becoming a fan of Belgian brews; at least the way they brew it in Southern California. Continue reading

American Craft Beer Week: Naja’s Place Redondo Beach

It is American Craft Beer Week and I have decided to try and find as many American craft beers as possible in the South Bay. I started my search at Naja’s Place on the International Boardwalk on the Redondo Beach Pier. Tanya has been taken off the Methotrexate that has prevented her from enjoying a nice beer, she is going to be able to join me on this adventure. Since Naja’s Place has 88 beers on tap, it seemed like the best place to start. Unfortunately, Naja’s does not offer flights, but the bartender, Kara, was kind enough to provide short pours so we could try a few different brews. Tanya started off with a Knee Deep Tanilla Porter and I had the Hangar 24 Double IPA. We then moved on to a Black Phoenix for Tanya and a Ballast Point Tongue Buckler.

The food selection at Naja’s is not really our style so we took a stroll down the Boardwalk towards the pier and ended up at El Torito for a little dinner and to take a few photos of the pier and marina. We then went back to Naja’s for a final tasting; this time Tanya had a Firestone Velvet Merlin and I had the Firestone 15th IPA. All of the brews were very nice and I have to thank Kara for her suggestions for Tanya; it was obvious that Tanya really enjoyed the beers she had, especially the Black Phoenix. Continue reading

Mother’s Day at the Cahuenga Corridor

These photos were taken Sunday, Mother’s Day, at the new Cahuenga Corridor in Hollywood, CA. The Cahuenga Corridor is an open air street market that is held on Sundays on the recently opened East Cahuenga Alley. This was the second week of the street market and it was Mother’s Day, so I was not surprised that it was not packed; but then again, I was not there very long.

The Cahuenga Corridor features street vendors, artisans, food and music. It intersects with the farmer’s market and the hours overlap, so I am sure as the street market grows it will eventually seem as one with the farmer’s market. Readers that are interested in exhibiting or performing can visit the Cahuenga Corridor web site, or contact me as I have an acquaintance involved with getting this off the ground, so I can put you in direct contact.
