Business N Beer, a new kind of networking group

Since we joined the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce late last year, we have had the pleasure of meeting and interacting with many small business owners in the South Bay area. Through these interactions I have been invited to join several service clubs and business networking groups. While I wish I had the time and money to join every service club the fact is I do not, so I volunteer my services to help publicize their fundraisers. As far as networking groups are concerned, I can definitely see the value in them but they all seem to come with obligations …

Smog City Brewing Opens & Strand Brewers Club Party

Saturday was day six of the 2013 American Craft Beer Week and in keeping with the theme of the week these photos are from the Smog City Brewing grand opening and a birthday party for the President of the Strand Brewers Club, a local home brewers club. If you have been following this site recently, you probably noticed that Smog City Brewing, a 2012 Great American Beer Festival Gold Medal winner, has been holding a few soft-opens in preparation for their grand opening. Well, Saturday was the big day. As Tanya really enjoys the Smog City Groundwork Coffee Porter and …

San Pedro Brewing Company and Smog City Brewing

Friday was day five of the 8th Annual American Craft Beer Week (ACBW) and I was able to visit two gold medal winners that are both located in the South Bay; San Pedro Brewing Company from San Pedro and Smog City Brewing Company (2012 Great American Beer Festival) in Torrance. San Pedro Brewing Company is a brewpub that has been in San Pedro for 13 years and currently has seven beers brewed on location. Smog City Brewing Company just moved to Torrance and is having their grand opening today, May 18 from 12-8 PM. Both locations have a wide variety …

Photos from the Abigaile One Year Anniversary Party

These photos are from the Abigaile 1st Anniversary & Southbay Magazine Issue Release party which was held last night at Abigaile in Hermosa Beach. I have to admit, it seems like I have been going to Abigaile longer than that, but the fact of the matter is that we did not even discover Abigaile and the Brewery at Abigaile until last May during American Craft Beer Week. We became instant fans of not only the fine brews turned out by Brewmaster Brian Brewer, but we found the food creations of Chef Tin to be equally worth returning for. Of course, …

Schooner at Sunset, Sunset Beach

These photos were taken Saturday at a new gastropub, Schooner at Sunset, which is located at 16821 Pacific Coast Highway, Sunset Beach, CA. For those not sure where Sunset Beach is, it is the very north end of Huntington Beach, just south of Seal Beach. Your car’s GPS is most likely going to call it Huntington Beach, so don’t worry, it is all the same place. To be honest, I am not really in the habit of going down there unless I am taking a weekend motorcycle ride down the coast. The fact of the matter is, when I initially …

Fall Gathering Open House at Abigaile, Hermosa Beach

Last night we went to the Abigaile Fall Gathering open house in Hermosa Beach. If you read this blog with any regularity you have probably heard me mention them on numerous occasions as they house The Brewery at Abigaile. We discovered them during American Craft Beer Week when the manager at The Rockefeller recommended them to us. We quickly became big fans. Not only did they brew a wide variety of beers, but they had some nice plates on their menu that made it interesting to experiment. I soon learned of their Chef Tin and was immediately impressed. The guy …

The Rockefeller Gastropub, Hermosa Beach

Last month, during American Craft Beer Week (ACBW), I accidentally discovered The Rockefeller Gastropub on Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach. I will never forget our first visit there. It was day six of ACBW and it was my goal to find as many American craft beers that I had never tried before as possible. The fact that I was able to come up with 12 new brews at that point of our adventure truly said something about the quality of the brews they pour. As Colleen, the manager, said, “We try to keep a good turnaround of quality brews.” They …

A return visit to Monkish Brewing and Strand Brewing

As a result of our participation and documentation of the American Craft Beer Week in May, we became aware of several new local craft brewers, two of which are Monkish Brewing and Strand Brewing Company, both of which are located in Torrance. For me personally, one of the greatest advantages of micro breweries is that there is a pretty regular rotation of the taps; that being there is always something new to be found. Since I was in the general neighborhood, I decided to stop by Monkish Brewing Company as I recalled Henry, owner and brewer, mention that he was …

Photos from Hollywood On Tap

Saturday afternoon, October 20, 2012, was the first Hollywood On Tap beer festival benefiting The Blank Theatre Company. This fund raising event was held at Paramount Studios in Hollywood. The festival included more than 40 craft brews and included dozens of local craft brewers, several food trucks and live music. 100% of the proceeds went to benefit The Blank Theatre Company, a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. Regular readers of this blog know that I have been attending many beer festivals sin the last several months; so of them have been going on for a while and a few of them …

Tasting Allagash Brewing at The Rockefeller

Last night The Rockefeller in Hermosa Beach had a beer tasting featuring Allagash Brewing, from Portland, ME. Allagash specializes in Belgian style brews and I had tried their Allagash White on draught and really enjoyed it, so I did not hesitate in accepting the invitation to try five more of their brews. The downside was that the beers were brought in bottles, which [in my personal opinion] is never as good as on tap. Storing the bottles on ice just made the beer colder than I would have preferred, but the glasses were small and my hands are warm so …
