American Craft Beer Week, Day 4

This group of photos are from American Craft Beer Week 2013 (ACBW), day 4. Regular readers know that on Thursdays we have our Business & Beer gatherings; so it was a little difficult for us to get out of town long enough to get to a Great American Beer Festival (GABF) winner and get back to the area for our Business & Beer meetup. Business & Beer was scheduled to be held at Alpine Inn at Alpine Village in Torrance, which could have been a great idea as they do have a wide selection of beers from local craft brewers as well as microbreweries from around the country. Unfortunately, a significant portion of their taps were out of service and while they did have a couple GABF winners (Firestone Walker and Uinta Brewing); they were not serving anything I was particularly interested in. When we finished with Business & Beer, we drove out to Hot’s Kitchen in Hermosa Beach.

Hot’s Kitchen has a very good tap list; but unfortunately, their servers do not seem to know craft beer very well. They recognized me, but did not know it is American Craft Beer Week which I think is pretty odd for a bar that seems to specialize in American craft beers. I think they have a nice selection, but you had better know what you want because getting suggestions will be a matter of the blind leading the blind. On the upside, getting tastes of beers you are interested in seems easy as long as you are only asking for a couple freebies. They offer flights, but they are preset. I happen to know that if you have the right beertender, at the right time, you can make up your own flight.

Business & Beer Joins Meetup at Alpine Inn

These photos are from our Business & Beer gathering at Alpine Inn, located at the Alpine Village in Torrance. Over the weekend we decided that we would try out the Meetup business networking platform to see if we could generate some additional interest from people that do not use Facebook. What we did not realize is that they have an approval process, so it took a few days before we were actually added to the system. In two days we got 10 new members, but as far as attendance is concerned, we had two people that joined us as a result of Meetup, even though they did not join the Meetup group. We will stick it out for a month and see how it progresses. I’d like to see us grow to about 50 regular attendees by the end of the experiment.

If you are into craft beer, enjoy networking with others and live or work in the South Bay area, you should probably check out Business & Beer. We meet every Thursday at a different microbrewery, brewpub or gastropub at 6:00 PM. There are no restrictions, dues, mandatory meetings; just show up when you can. You can find the schedule on the front page of BusinessNBeer.com. You can also sign up to the mailing list, or you can Like Us on Facebook to stay current. And for the time being, we will be putting our schedule on Meetup.com as well. Continue reading

Business & Beer at Alpine Inn, Torrance

These photos are from our return visit to the Alpine Inn with our Business & Beer networking group. The Alpine Inn is a German gastropub that has a nice selection of craft beers from the United States, Germany and the Czech Republic. This was our third visit to the Alpine Inn and it seems that every time we meet there we have a nice turnout of about 15 people. When you consider that Alpine Village is the furthest south we take our group and that it was only three days after New Year’s Day, I was pleased to see the turnout.

If networking is important to your business and you live or work in the South Bay area, you should check out Business & Beer, the networking group that takes away the stress of meetups during normal working hours. Every Thursday at 6:00 PM we meet at a different microbrewery, brewpub or gastropub; if you enjoy good beer and social networking, Business & Beer is for you. Feel free to sign up to the mailing list or Like Us on Facebook to be kept aware of upcoming network events. You will meet some nice people and probably discover some new craft beers. There are no dues or rules, so there is no reason to not give it a try. Continue reading
