4th Annual Beer, Art & Music Festival October 5, 2013

BAM Fest 2012

Great craft beers for a great cause

The 4th Annual Beer, Art & Music Festival (BAM Fest) is returning to Santa Monica on October 5, 2013 and tickets are now officially on sale. BAM Fest will feature more than 30 craft breweries, four wineries, three bands, gourmet food trucks, several art galleries and open artist studios and four hours of fun.

BAM Fest is a fundraiser benefiting the 18th Street Arts Center, a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization located in Santa Monica. The 18th Street Arts Center is a well-known and internationally respected alternative art space which has sponsored over 1,000 artists through their residency program. While enjoying the beer, food and music, many of these artists have opened their galleries to attendees of the event.

Tickets can be purchased online for $45 each; they will be $50 at the door if there are any tickets available by then; I would be somewhat surprised if there are, so if you want to come I recommend purchasing your tickets online ahead of time. Last year was my first time attending BAM Fest and everyone I talked to that had attended the earlier events told me it was the best one yet. As the 4th Annual BAM Fest is even bigger than last year, I expect to hear, “this was the best one yet” by October 6. I hope to see you there.

2nd Annual Waves of Grain at Shade Hotel, June 30

Waves of Grain

Over 40 Craft Brewers at Waves of Grain

It is that time of year again, beer festivals are upon us and the fine crafted brews are flowing. June 30, Shade Hotel in Manhattan Beach, CA is hosting their 2nd Annual Waves of Grain Beer Fest; this time benefiting the Richstone Family Center in Hawthorne, CA. The Richstone Family Center is an organization dedicated to preventing and treating child abuse. Child abuse is a rampant epidemic in this country and the children need all the help they can get. As my daughter works for DCFS this is something that means a lot to me, so I had to get involved in supporting them.

I was at the first Waves of Grain Beerfest last year and it was a blast. Last year they had 25 breweries represented; this year it will be more than 40 American craft brewers representing. The list includes Anchor Brewing, Beachwood, Ballast Point, Cosmic Ales, El Segundo Brewing, Monkish, Strand Brewing, Smog City, Stone, Dogfish Head and a host of others. If you enjoy craft beer you are going to really enjoy this. If being able to enjoy great craft beers and help a worthy cause at the same time is not incentive enough; they are also having a barbecue with a whole roasted pig. I have not steered you wrong yet, this is going to be a very fun event; you do not want to miss it. Continue reading

Photos of Sausage Fest at FIG in Santa Monica

These photos are from last night at the 1st Annual Sausage Fest, held at FIG Restaurant in the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica. Our friends at Smog City Brewing are celebrating their first year in business and are pouring their fine brews at many events this October. When asked if I would not mind covering the event, I was honored and more than happy to do so. Over the years I have attended many events that might be described as a sausage fest, but this was the first one I attended that actually served sausage. In fact, if it were not for the sausage, there was no resemblance to any sausage fest I have photographed before.

Hosted by FIG’s Chef Ray Garcia, additional chefs included Vartan Abgaryan of Public Kitchen; Greg Daniels of Haven Gastropub; Daniel Mattern of Cooks County; Bernhard Mairinger of Bier Beisl and Kris Morningstar of Ray’s and Stark Bar. Participating breweries, besides Smog City Brewing, included Eagle Rock Brewing Company, Hopf Wheat Brewery, Noble Ale Works, Brouwerij West and several others. FIG’s Chef Garcia is a homebrewer and provided four brews that he made; they were all very good. Some of the chefs offered pairings with beers provided by homebrewers that they were friends with. It was a very fun event and everyone seemed to have a great time. I know I did and I am looking forward to the 2nd Annual Sausage Fest. Thanks again to Smog City Brewing for the hookup.
