Smog City Brewing Opens & Strand Brewers Club Party

Saturday was day six of the 2013 American Craft Beer Week and in keeping with the theme of the week these photos are from the Smog City Brewing grand opening and a birthday party for the President of the Strand Brewers Club, a local home brewers club.

If you have been following this site recently, you probably noticed that Smog City Brewing, a 2012 Great American Beer Festival Gold Medal winner, has been holding a few soft-opens in preparation for their grand opening. Well, Saturday was the big day. As Tanya really enjoys the Smog City Groundwork Coffee Porter and it pairs really well with her carrot cake, she made a few dozen carrot cake cupcakes and some homemade beef jerky to bring with us as a way to advertise BusinessNBeer. To say that they were a hit would be an understatement. I was lucky to get a couple photos before all the treats were gone. It is also safe to say that Smog City Brewing was welcomed with open arms by the local craft beer community.

Since every craft brewer I am aware of started as a home brewer, it made sense to bring my camera to a Strand Brewers Club birthday party for their current president, Rives Borland. As it turns out, Rives is a pretty accomplished brewer in his own right as he has already won several competitions. Who knows, some day I may be writing about his new brewery. Continue reading

A visit to Craft Brewing Co and Claremont Craft Ales

I am usually the one trying to get someone to go for a bike ride and coming up with the destinations, so when my friend Phil asked me if I wanted to join him for a ride out to Chino I said yes and searched Google for a microbrewery in the area. When I woke up Saturday, I knew it was going to be a great day for a ride as it was already 70 at 9:00 AM.

Since the person Phil wanted to visit in Chino was not home yet, we decided to visit some mutual friends in Lake Elsinore to kill a little time. While we were visiting I happened to ask if they had tried out Craft Brewing Company since I knew it had to be pretty close. As it turns out, it was about a mile away and our friends were unaware of their existence; so we all headed over there. As it turned out, Sebring’s Catering out of Temecula was there serving chicken wraps, meatballs and penne salad, so we had some beer and food before heading out to Chino. Continue reading

Business N Beer’s return visit to Sophie’s Place, Redondo Beach

These photos are from our Business & Beer networking group’s return to Sophie’s Place in Redondo Beach last night. Sophie’s Place is a gastropub that serves really good food and offers 50 varieties of craft beer with eight brews on rotating taps. While our last few Business & Beer gatherings have had six or seven people show up, last night we had about 15. I was happy to see the big turnout, we had a good time.

If networking helps your business or it fits into your job description and you live or work in the South Bay, come check out Business & Beer. Business & Beer is a different kind of networking group. Unlike the more well-known business networking groups, there are no mandatory meetings, no dues, no restrictions on who can join. We meet every Thursday night at 6:00 PM and we meet at various microbreweries, brewpubs and gastropubs in the South Bay area. There are probably 50 people that have joined us, with our typical gatherings having between 10 and 15 people; with sometimes being less and sometimes more. The one consistent factor is that we have a good time and meet new people; oh, and we drink some good beer. If you want to join us, simply show up. The schedule is on the front page of BusinessNBeer.com and you can sign up to the mailing list so you will be notified when a date has been set. You can also follow us on Facebook to be sure you are kept in the loop. Continue reading
