4th Annual Beer, Art & Music Festival October 5, 2013

BAM Fest 2012

Great craft beers for a great cause

The 4th Annual Beer, Art & Music Festival (BAM Fest) is returning to Santa Monica on October 5, 2013 and tickets are now officially on sale. BAM Fest will feature more than 30 craft breweries, four wineries, three bands, gourmet food trucks, several art galleries and open artist studios and four hours of fun.

BAM Fest is a fundraiser benefiting the 18th Street Arts Center, a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization located in Santa Monica. The 18th Street Arts Center is a well-known and internationally respected alternative art space which has sponsored over 1,000 artists through their residency program. While enjoying the beer, food and music, many of these artists have opened their galleries to attendees of the event.

Tickets can be purchased online for $45 each; they will be $50 at the door if there are any tickets available by then; I would be somewhat surprised if there are, so if you want to come I recommend purchasing your tickets online ahead of time. Last year was my first time attending BAM Fest and everyone I talked to that had attended the earlier events told me it was the best one yet. As the 4th Annual BAM Fest is even bigger than last year, I expect to hear, “this was the best one yet” by October 6. I hope to see you there.

Beer Paper LA launch party

These photos are from the Beer Paper LA official launch party which was held last night at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach. Beer Paper LA is an online and monthly print paper that dedicates its pages to the local breweries and gastropubs in the Los Angeles, Orange County and Inland Empire areas of Southern California. Rather that reviewing individual craft beers, they concentrate on the brewery itself as well as the brewers that make the magic happen. The paper is free and should be found at any of our local microbreweries, bottle shops, homebrew supply stores and your upscale beer bars.

There was a great turnout at Beachwood with a couple hundred people showing up to welcome Beer Paper LA. In addition to the many fine beers brewed in-house, the guest tap list for the event was spectacular as usual. If you have never visited Beachwood BBQ & Brewing, you really should give them a try. They have some very good food and an amazing beer list. Every time I go there I wish I could spend the day just sampling everything on their guest tap beer list; I have already tried everything they brew there.

Thanks to everyone that made last night a fun evening; and congratulations and good luck to Beer Paper LA. Continue reading

Pliny the Younger release party at 38 Degrees

It is that time of year again; the groundhog looks for his shadow, people dodge asteroids and rumors of Pliny the Younger sightings start making their rounds. It was a week ago that I first heard rumors of Pliny the Younger being poured locally, but when I investigated further I discovered it was Pliny the Elder that was making an appearance; a nice IPA, but not quite a Younger. When I was at the Abigaile One Year Anniversary party a gentleman that was sitting next to us informed me that he had just gotten a text that Pliny the Younger would be appearing at a gastropub in Alhambra, 38 Degrees Ale House & Grill, on Saturday morning. Knowing how rumors can be, I decided to call them and confirm; it was true. After a short discussion with co-owner Clay Harding it was decided that I would ride out and photograph their event.

For those not in the know, Pliny the Younger is an annual release from Russian River Brewing Company. It is a triple IPA that is served on tap only and is released every February in very limited amounts. When I did some reading about prior releases there were talks about the beer lasting five days before it was sold out; now it is lucky to last five hours. 38 Degrees had more than 400 people standing out front waiting to get in and get their taste of this latest batch when I arrived around 10:30; the first guy in line arrived at 7:30! He really wanted his Pliny. Continue reading
