Torrance Annual Halloween Carnival

As I mentioned a couple months ago, I volunteered to help give the Torrance Rose Float Association (TRFA) some additional exposure to assist them in their fundraising efforts so the City of Torrance can be represented at the next Tournament of Roses Parade. A couple nights ago I heard that the TRFA needed volunteers to run their booth at the 2013 Torrance Annual Halloween Carnival, so Tanya stepped up to take care of their booth for a couple hours. Judging by the photos, she had as much fun as the kids playing the game. The City of Torrance no longer …

Street Toys Car Show at Alpine Village Oktoberfest

Sunday afternoon I headed over to Alpine Village in Torrance for the Street Toys Back to School Car Show which was held in conjunction with Alpine Village’s Oktoberfest. Sunday is family day at Oktoberfest so there were lots of families wandering around admiring the artwork on the show entries. From my understanding, Street Toys is governing body as it were for the local car clubs; so this event included many different car clubs covering a wide spectrum of car styles with trophies for every class. They had 2-door cars, 4-door cars, mini-trucks, full sized trucks, imports, classics, motorcycles and anything …

Tuesday at the Vans US Open of Surfing

The 2013 Vans US Open of Surfing is happening in Huntington Beach, CA this week. I have never gone to a surf contest and did not even know it was going on until one of my acquaintances posted on her Facebook page that she was thinking of going out to watch it. I am not sure what it was, perhaps the great weather and encouragement from Tanya had something to do with it, but I decided to grab the camera and ride down to the Huntington Beach pier. It was a learning experience; that is for sure. For one thing, …

Sativa’s Graduation Party

These photos are from Sativa’s graduation party which was held Saturday. From what I could see, Sativa has a very large extended family and a lot of friends that all wanted to congratulate her as she prepares to go to school back east in Boston. As I was leaving, her mother mentioned how many times they had large family gatherings and no one takes any photos that are seen by more than a couple people. I am sure she is going to cherish these for a very long time. In addition to taking the photos, I am able to host …

Redondo Beach Pier & International Boardwalk

As the summer tourist season is approaching, I thought I might spend a little time wandering around the South Bay to photograph popular tourist destinations for those that might be coming to visit the Torrance and Redondo Beach area. Since the Redondo Beach Pier has been in the news lately due to it being the 25th anniversary of when the Redondo Beach Pier had a major fire that destroyed half of the Redondo Pier horseshoe, I decided I would start off with a walk around the Redondo Beach Pier and the International Boardwalk. The Redondo Beach Pier is a really …

Third Annual Rod & Kustom BBQ Photos

On Saturday, the CrossMembers Hot Rod Fellowship held their Third Annual Rod & Kustom BBQ at the Restoration Life Christian Church in Lawndale. This was a fundraising event with a car and bike show, [outstanding] live music, and a barbecue. In addition there were a few vendors there and they held a raffle with 100% of the proceeds going to Hands of Hope: Mission Ethiopia. Hands of Hope: Mission Ethiopia provides water purification and well digging services as well as humanitarian relief to the Afar people of Ethiopia. They are attempting to raise $40,000 to purchase a new hydraulic well …

Photos of Fiesta Hermosa 2013

Back in 1972, the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce decided to put together “the largest arts & crafts fair in Southern California.” I have not visited all the arts and crafts fairs in Southern California so I cannot confirm whether or not they met their goal, but it has to be one of the longest running ones. Not only have they had this fair every year for more than 40 years, they do it twice a year, every year; Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day Weekend. It definitely signals the beginning and end of summer in the South Bay. While …

Memorial Day Weekend at South Coast Botanic Garden

Saturday was the beginning of the long 2013 Memorial Day weekend and since Tanya has been working pretty hard getting her new book, Faces of Juicing, ready for publishing, we decided to take advantage of the great weather and pay another visit to the South Coast Botanic Garden on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The South Coast Botanic Garden is huge with over 40,000 trees and 200,000 plants, so we are able to return several times a year and it always looks at least a little different as different plants bloom at different times of the year. There are several species …

Torrance 54th Annual Armed Forces Day Parade

On Saturday, Torrance held their 54th Annual Armed Forces Day Parade, the longest running military parade sponsored by any city in the United States. Prior to the event I was reading about how much smaller the parade would be this year due to budget constraints as a result of the sequester. This was my third time attending the parade in the last few years, and while there were slight changes this year, I cannot say that there were not similar cutbacks prior to the sequester. Either way, it was a fun event for the entire family and Torrance Boulevard was …

Torrance readies for Armed Forces Day Parade

Today, the City of Torrance will have their 54th Annual Armed Forces Day Parade; the nation’s longest running military parade sponsored by any city. The parade begins at 1:30 PM and will travel up Torrance Boulevard; beginning at Crenshaw Boulevard and ending in front of the Torrance City Hall at Torrance Boulevard and Madronna Avenue. Even though the recently implemented sequester is forcing a few changes as far as things like what military units, bands and flyover will be present for the parade, the show shall go on. Friday, there was a display of various military vehicles, big guns and …
