Photos from Taste of the Nation LA

These photos are from Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation Los Angeles which was held Sunday at Media Park in Culver City, CA. Taste of the Nation, put on by No Kid Hungry, featured some of Los Angeles’ top chefs with more than 50 food options with everything from tacos and hamburgers to shrimp and tasty little desserts. To tell you the truth, there was far more food available than I could itemize. Judging by the lines and aromas emanating from the various booths, it was all pretty good. I was able to try a few samples, each of them quite well done. In addition to the various foods there were beer samples poured by some of my favorite local craft breweries, lots of wine options and even some specialty mixed cocktails. This was one of those events that it would be a good idea to have a designated driver.

Taste of the Nation has been fighting childhood hunger for 25 years by connecting kids to effective nutrition programs like school breakfast and summer meals. In addition, through its Cooking Matters program, the No Kid Hungry campaign educates and empowers low-income families to stretch their food budgets so their kids get healthy meals at home. In addition to ticket sales, a burger competition between top chefs along with live and silent auctions helped raise funds to support local recipients including the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, St. Joseph’s Center, California Association of Food Banks, and California Food Policy Advocates. It was a beautiful Southern California afternoon with several hundred attendees all having a good time supporting a good cause. Bartels’ Ride to the Dunes for Child Abuse Awareness

On Sunday, Bartels’ Harley-Davidson sponsored a Ride to the Dunes to help bring about a greater awareness of the epidemic state of child abuse. The ride began at Bartels’ in Marina del Rey and took the coast up to Sycamore Cove State Beach. I had too much to do Sunday to take the day off, but I did head over to Bartels’ before everyone took off. They had music provided by Jukebox Zero and a couple sponsors there providing donuts and selling raffle tickets.

With Grand Marshal, Lorenzo Lamas leading the escorted group, I’d guess they had about 150 bikes headed out to Malibu where they were greeted with more music and a lunch. You can find more information about the event and the sponsors at http://www.ridetothedunes.org/. Continue reading

Third Annual Rod & Kustom BBQ Photos

On Saturday, the CrossMembers Hot Rod Fellowship held their Third Annual Rod & Kustom BBQ at the Restoration Life Christian Church in Lawndale. This was a fundraising event with a car and bike show, [outstanding] live music, and a barbecue. In addition there were a few vendors there and they held a raffle with 100% of the proceeds going to Hands of Hope: Mission Ethiopia. Hands of Hope: Mission Ethiopia provides water purification and well digging services as well as humanitarian relief to the Afar people of Ethiopia. They are attempting to raise $40,000 to purchase a new hydraulic well digging rig which will reach a depth of 300 feet to access clean water far beneath the surface. For more information email hotrodfellowship@hotmail.com or call (310) 973-5059.

I had been informed about the event because of my association with the Original Sinner Motorcycle Club’s Meetup group, the Original Sinners Riding Club. If you ride and are looking for some people to ride with, you should check them out. Bikes of every style are welcomed; this is not part of the motorcycle club, so if you do not want to wear a patch, that is not an issue. After checking out the car and bike show we headed up to Point Fermin and met up with the Sinners at Walker’s Cafe, a popular location overlooking the Palos Verdes Peninsula coastline. I used the opportunity to take two bikes out on the same day; it was a good day. Continue reading
