The Stanley Cup returns to the South Bay

Sorry, for the delay; it has been a busy week. These photos were taken Wednesday on Pier Avenue where it meets The Strand as the Los Angeles Kings brought the Stanley Cup back to Hermosa Beach for the second time in as many years. Unlike last year when the parade basically went down Pier Avenue from the fire department to the plaza, this year’s parade began at the Redondo Beach Police Department and ended in Manhattan Beach.

Bluegrass, Punk & Gospel at Saint Rocke

These photos are from a concert I attended at Saint Rocke, a live music venue in Hermosa Beach, on Wednesday night. The photos begin with Saint Rocke’s Bluegrass Happy Hour, which featured the band, Pompous Highmen. The main show featured Hang Dog Expression, The Curly Wolf and starred Dustbowl Revival. A week or so ago I won a contest on the Saint Rocke Facebook page; as a prize I won a couple passes to an upcoming event. I let Tanya look through the Saint Rocke calendar of upcoming events and she suggested we see Dustbowl Revival, an old school bluegrass, …

Decem-brrrr in the South Bay

Last night a meteorologist (or two) on my Twitter feed mentioned that today west facing beaches would have some high surf advisories. I immediately noted on my calendar that I would need to head over to said beaches to see what kind of photos I could get. I have to admit, I really did not expect temperatures to hit the low 80’s; I guess that is why they call it Decem-brrrr. The main obstacle I was to encounter is that high tide was going to happen around 1:00 AM and, truth be told, I have never photographed surf in the …

Photos from Showcase Hermosa

Thursday, July 18th, the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau hosted Showcase Hermosa on the rooftop of the 200 Pier Avenue Building in Hermosa Beach. Showcase Hermosa was a reception that was to promote Hermosa Beach as a travel destination by showcasing various restaurants, hotels and shops that are based in Hermosa Beach. The reception had snacks from a few of the local Hermosa Beach restaurants, as well as wines and American craft beer provided by The Brewery at Abigaile. Towards the end of the event the group went on a walking tour of the three hotels by …

Photos of Fiesta Hermosa 2013

Back in 1972, the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce decided to put together “the largest arts & crafts fair in Southern California.” I have not visited all the arts and crafts fairs in Southern California so I cannot confirm whether or not they met their goal, but it has to be one of the longest running ones. Not only have they had this fair every year for more than 40 years, they do it twice a year, every year; Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day Weekend. It definitely signals the beginning and end of summer in the South Bay. While …

American Craft Beer Week, Day 4

This group of photos are from American Craft Beer Week 2013 (ACBW), day 4. Regular readers know that on Thursdays we have our Business & Beer gatherings; so it was a little difficult for us to get out of town long enough to get to a Great American Beer Festival (GABF) winner and get back to the area for our Business & Beer meetup. Business & Beer was scheduled to be held at Alpine Inn at Alpine Village in Torrance, which could have been a great idea as they do have a wide selection of beers from local craft brewers …

Business & Beer Meetup at Abigaile

These photos are from our Business and Beer gathering with Meetup last Thursday, May 9, at The Brewery at Abigaile. I cannot really say why I am just now getting around to posting the photos, other than it was a busy weekend. The Brewery at Abigaile is my favorite brewpub and is located in Hermosa Beach. I was introduced to them one year ago and became an instant fan. Last Thursday was a special evening at Abigaile in that they were doing a food pairing with Beachwood BBQ & Brewing from Long Beach and they are another of my favorite …

Some of our favorite places to eat

I was going through some photos I have taken over the last nine days and decided that since I had not put them online yet, I would take the opportunity to talk about three locations Tanya and I visit on a pretty regular basis; and always have a good time. These locations are Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach; Abigaile Restaurant in Hermosa Beach and Benihana Restaurant in Torrance. The first batch of photos are from Beachwood BBQ & Brewing, a brewpub in Long Beach that specializes in barbecue style foods. As you might imagine, because it is the …

Carl Palmer Plays Saint Rocke

A couple weeks ago the good people at Saint Rocke, a concert venue in Hermosa Beach, CA gave me a couple passes for an upcoming show. When I heard Carl Palmer would be performing there, I knew what concert I wanted to see. I have been to many concerts since the late 1960’s, and the best show I have ever seen was Emerson, Lake & Palmer at the Hollywood Bowl in 1971; they were that good. So last night we decided to go to Hudson House in Redondo Beach for dinner, and then headed down the street to Saint Rocke …

1st Annual Froth Awards: No green beer allowed

Sunday, St. Patrick’s Day, and what better way to celebrate than to enjoy some of the best beers brewed in the South Bay at the Easy Reader 1st Annual Froth Awards held at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach. They called it the Froth Awards, but I do not think it was as much a competition as an award of recognition to the rising stars of brewing in the South Bay. The day consisted of live music to accompany the food and beer pairings that were provided. The winners were those that attended; we got some great beer, food and music. …
