Business N Beer at Select Beer Store

The Business N Beer networking group had our first get-together last night at Select Beer Store in Redondo Beach, and I have to say, I was very happy with the turnout. Even though there were last minute cancellations by some, we still had 10 people show up. Even though I was the only one that knew everyone, the people that did show up immediately began introducing themselves and it looked like a group of old friends talking over a nice beer.

We had a real estate agent, insurance agent, merchant processing, telecommunications and the IT sector represented and I heard several conversations with almost everyone seeming to have made at least one new business lead. It proved that the concept of doing business over a beer was a pretty good idea. I even had one gentleman come over and ask what Business N Beer was; hopefully he will show up at a future gathering.

Business N Beer is a networking group that meets every Thursday evening at 6 PM at a different location in the South Bay. The goal is to network with other business owners in an informal setting while supporting local business, local brewers and American craft beer. Next week we will meet at The Brewery at Abigaile in Hermosa Beach. I have been told by the owner of The Brewery that there will be something special for our group, so this is one you do not want to miss. You can get full details for that event as well as the others that are currently scheduled at BusinessNBeer.com. Enjoy the photos. Continue reading

Business N Beer, a new kind of networking group

Since we joined the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce late last year, we have had the pleasure of meeting and interacting with many small business owners in the South Bay area. Through these interactions I have been invited to join several service clubs and business networking groups. While I wish I had the time and money to join every service club the fact is I do not, so I volunteer my services to help publicize their fundraisers. As far as networking groups are concerned, I can definitely see the value in them but they all seem to come with obligations I can not meet. This would include mandatory weekly meetings that might meet at 7:00 AM for breakfast or lunch at a Sizzler or something along those lines. My schedule just does not allow for that kind of commitment.

As you [may] know, in May Tanya and I participated in American Craft Beer Week and in the process became aware of several microbreweries, brewpubs and gastropubs in the South Bay area. I got the opportunity to meet many of the owners and well as several brewmasters as well. I could not help but notice that as Craft Beer Week progressed, we started seeing a lot of the same people at the various locations. In the subsequent weeks since then the number of people that we would meet steadily increased. That is when Tanya got a brilliant idea; we would start our own business networking group, but add a twist to it. We decided to name it Business N Beer. Continue reading

Beachwood BBQ & Brewing Long Beach

Yesterday Tanya and I stopped by Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach. We were in Long Beach for the Chocolate Blues & Networking Festival and I knew there were a couple brewpubs in the area, so I figured after a long day of work a nice flight would be a good way to end the day. I recently met one of the bartenders at a local event and Dave over at Select Beer always speaks highly of Beachwood, so I decided to head over. I will be honest, as we worked our way over there I told Tanya there is no way that I would drive here “just for a beer” as it is kind of out of the way for us, but I would soon changed my tune.

Beachwood BBQ is a little difficult to find as the address is 210 E. 3rd Street, but it faces Promenade. They have some small sandwich boards if you are walking by, but if you are westbound on 3rd, you need to know where it is. We were greeted by Ian’s big smile so we seated ourselves at the bar. Their flights are four of their brews, and since they had a total of nine available, we decided to each get a flight so we could try everything they made. We were both very impressed. We tried the Mandarin Dream, Unconditional Blonde, Alpha Master, Knucklehead Red, Thrill Seeker, The Dominator and three versions of the Udder Love; CO2, nitrogen and cask. Tanya really liked the Knucklehead Red and I found all of their IPA’s very nice and hoppy. We ended up bringing a growler of the Mandarin Dream home as it is a Saison and we have both become suckers for them. Continue reading
