Day three of the 2012 LA Beer Week

So, this is the 4th Annual LA Beer Week, which runs from September 20-30. Yes, our “Beer Week” is 11 days long. I am not sure if we get overtime or not. I have not made a concerted effort to participate in all the festivities but it seems that I will be to some degree. It was not planned, but Day One of LA Beer Week happen to be on a Thursday, which means we had a Business & Beer meetup at The Brewery at Abigaile. Friday, or Day Two of Beer Week was spent at Oktoberfest at Alpine Village. …

Photos from the Sprinkles ’N’ Stuff grand Opening

Saturday morning, Sprinkles ’N’ Stuff decorating supplies store held their Grand Opening and ribbon cutting in downtown Torrance. A couple days earlier I had been in the neighborhood and happened to walk by the store and noticed a flyer advertising the event, so I went in and offered to photograph it for them. Sprinkles ’N’ Stuff is a local small business that carries baking pans, chocolate molds, cake boards and boxes, sprinkles, sugars and more. They are located at 1272 Sartori Avenue in Old Torrance. They have a 50’s motif so even if you just go in to look around …

Photos from Oktoberfest at Alpine Village, Torrance

These photos are from Friday night at Oktoberfest at Alpine Village in Torrance. After we held a Business & Beer meeting at the Alpine Inn at Alpine Village, the General Manager invited us back to attend Oktoberfest. Since it was Day Two of LA Beer Week, we decided to take him up on his generous offer last night. If you have never attended Oktoberfest and you enjoy good beer, oompa bands and the Chicken Dance I suggest you head over to Alpine Village to check out their 45th Annual Oktoberfest. It is the biggest and longest running Oktoberfest this side …

Business & Beer returns to The Brewery at Abigaile, Hermosa Beach

LA Beer Week started on Thursday, September 20, and Business & Beer acknowledged the event by returning to The Brewery at Abigaile in Hermosa Beach. The Brewery at Abigaile is a brewpub that happens to brew some of the finest beers in the South Bay and has an outstanding food menu as well. With their wide selections of available beers it is safe to say there is something for just about everyone. This was Business & Beer’s second visit to Abigaile and we had our largest gathering to date. In fact, the only other gathering that came close to Thursday’s …

My comments to the Torrance Planning Commission in support of CUP12-00015

Tonight, Smog City Brewing had their hearing in front of the Torrance Planning Commission for a Conditional Use Permit to open a tasting room in Torrance. If you want to look it up, it was CUP12-00015. As we were given three minutes and I was pretty nervous, my comments ended up being edited slightly at the last minute; but the following is my comments in their entirety. Oh, they were granted the permit and will hopefully be open in February and on the Business & Beer rotation soon thereafter. My name is Lloyd Brown. I have been a Torrance and …

Business & Beer at Monkish Brewing, Torrance

Two months ago, Tanya and I came up with the idea of Business & Beer; a networking group for small business owners in the South Bay that would meet after normal working hours and we would support the local craft brewers in the area. Since we became familiar with many of the brewpubs and gastropubs in the South Bay area, we decided to include them in the rotation. Last night we had our ninth get-together and our first return to one of our original hosts, Monkish Brewing Company in Torrance, CA. Monkish Brewing is a relatively new micro brewery in …

Torrance Chamber of Commerce: Would I join again? Pros and Cons

When I started writing the story about my experience with the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC), I knew that this would have to be broken up into at least three parts. There was too much to say, and it would have been ancient history by the time I got everything documented in the proper order. My goal in the first two parts was simple; give the back story to my time with the TACC and what happened when I was called into Donna Duperon’s office. I did my best to not editorialize or give my opinion; I wanted to …

Business N Beer at Sophie’s Place, Redondo Beach

These photos are from our eighth Business & Beer event which was held last night at Sophie’s Place in the Riviera Village portion of Redondo Beach. Sophie’s Place is arguably the best gastropub in Redondo Beach. It seems hard to believe that we only became familiar with Sophie’s in the middle of July. We always feel so welcome there that I sometimes feel like we have been long time patrons. Besides the friendly atmosphere and the nice variety of food offerings, the thing I like most is their ever rotating taps. While they may only offer eight taps, the beers …

Photos from the Cookin’ Stuff grand opening

Today is the Grand Opening for the new location of Cookin’ Stuff, in Torrance, CA. Cookin’ Stuff is not exactly new to Torrance, in fact, they were at their previous location in the Southwood Shopping Center for close to 25 years. Today, they officially opened their new location at 2722 Sepulveda Blvd, Torrance, CA 90505. They actually moved here a couple weeks ago, but today is their Grand Opening celebration. All day long (until 6:00 PM) they will be having raffles, treats and demos for anyone that stops in. Although I am not in the kitchen much, I have shopped …

Business N Beer at Alpine Inn, Torrance

Last night Business N Beer met at Alpine Inn located at the world famous, Alpine Village in Torrance, CA. Alpine Village is home to Southern California’s largest and oldest Oktoberfest. This year will be their 45th Annual, and if you have never been, you should check it out sometime. I got reintroduced to the Alpine Village back in March when we went to Alpine Inn for a Chamber of Commerce luncheon. The food reminded me a lot of some of my childhood meals but what really caught my attention was their beer board when we were walking out. I knew …
