The Stanley Cup returns to the South Bay

Sorry, for the delay; it has been a busy week. These photos were taken Wednesday on Pier Avenue where it meets The Strand as the Los Angeles Kings brought the Stanley Cup back to Hermosa Beach for the second time in as many years. Unlike last year when the parade basically went down Pier Avenue from the fire department to the plaza, this year’s parade began at the Redondo Beach Police Department and ended in Manhattan Beach. The 2012 Stanley Cup comes to Hermosa Beach

Today the Stanley Cup arrived in Hermosa Beach, CA and about 5,000 people showed up to welcome it to the beach. The Cup was accompanied by Los Angeles Kings center and Hermosa Beach resident (during hockey season anyway), Jarret Stoll. Representing the City of Hermosa Beach was a slew of Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce members, elected officials and a couple fire trucks. It was a beautiful day in Hermosa and the Stanley Cup looked great in the bright sunshine. You could see the sun bouncing off it as it traveled down Pier Avenue and it was still a few blocks away.

Since it was Jarret’s birthday yesterday, everyone joined in singing Happy Birthday and of course there were the ever present “Go Kings, Go!” and We Got the Cup!” I am not sure, but I may have heard a wedding proposal sent out Jarret’s way. As he just signed a three year contract, I will put it on my calendar to get there a little earlier next year.

The Kings Win the 2012 Stanley Cup

The Los Angeles Kings have won the 2012 Stanley Cup; the first time they have accomplished this since the franchise was founded way back in 1967. I decided to head over to Staples Center after I was convinced that I could not jinx their chances, and even though New Jersey scored about two minutes after I headed out, it was not enough to stop the Kings as they skated on to a 6-1 victory.

While I was relatively confident there would be no issues with crowd control, I parked about a good half-mile away (behind LAPD’s staging area) which turned out to be a pretty good thing. As I was walking towards the Staples Center, I noticed the Excalibur Restaurant had a sign out front advertising craft beer, so I stopped in and watched the end of the game with a few dozen enthusiastic fans. When the game ended, I made the short walk to Staples and joined the thousands that were celebrating. It is a good night to be an LA Kings fan. Congratulations to the Los Angeles Kings and their fans on a great season.
