Business & Beer comes back to Strand Brewing, Torrance

These photos are from our most recent Business & Beer gathering which we had at Strand Brewing Company in Torrance. Strand Brewing is a local microbrewery that has been growing by leaps and bounds over the last several months. I remember when I first started going there, there would be maybe three or four people on a Saturday afternoon. These days you and more likely to find 15-20 on a Thursday evening. I can imagine that Saturdays are even better. We had about 20 people show up for Business & Beer which was about double of what I expected; it …

Business & Beer at El Segundo Brewing Co, El Segundo

These photos are from the Business & Beer return visit to the El Segundo Brewing Company (ESBC) tasting room. This was our second visit to ESBC and we had a few more people than our first visit there, so that was a good thing. El Segundo Brewing, also known as Blue House Ales, is a microbrewery that makes some of my favorite IPA’s (White Dog and Two 5 Left). They also have some nice pale ales as well as their Hyperion Stout. Last night they offered a vanilla bean stout that was so good we had to bring a growler …

My comments to the Torrance Planning Commission in support of CUP12-00015

Tonight, Smog City Brewing had their hearing in front of the Torrance Planning Commission for a Conditional Use Permit to open a tasting room in Torrance. If you want to look it up, it was CUP12-00015. As we were given three minutes and I was pretty nervous, my comments ended up being edited slightly at the last minute; but the following is my comments in their entirety. Oh, they were granted the permit and will hopefully be open in February and on the Business & Beer rotation soon thereafter. My name is Lloyd Brown. I have been a Torrance and …

Beachwood BBQ & Brewing One Year Anniversary Party

These photos were taken Saturday at the Beachwood BBQ & Brewing One Year Anniversary Celebration, which was held at their Long Beach location on E. 3rd Street in Long Beach, CA. You might recall that I made my first visit to Beachwood Brewing a couple weeks ago. During that visit we were impressed enough with their home brews that we brought a growler of Mandarin Dream home with us, with the intent of returning for the one year celebration. It was a good idea. I remember being impressed that Beachwood was only one year old, yet had nine different brews …

American Craft Beer Week: San Pedro Brewing Company

It is Sunday evening and the 7th Annual American Craft Beer Week (ACBW) has come to a conclusion. We ended our week long adventure at San Pedro Brewing Company, in beautiful downtown San Pedro, CA. I have been to San Pedro Brewing at least once before and they are an award winning brewpub that definitely rotates the beers they brew. It was somewhat fitting that we ended up at San Pedro Brewing on the seventh day of the 7th Annual ACBW since they had seven different home brews available. Naturally, I got a flight of all seven. I just now …

Waves of Grain Beerfest 2012 – Roundhouse Aquarium Fundraiser

These photos were taken at the Waves of Grain Beerfest 2012, held at Shade Hotel in Manhattan Beach, CA. This was a fundraiser for Roundhouse Aquarium in Manhattan Beach, an environmental organization committed to fostering and promoting the education of the oceans, tidelands and beaches of Southern California. It is tough to beat a fundraiser that showcases craft beer, but Waves of Grain did just that by providing craft beers from around the country as well as several local breweries. Local breweries in attendance included Bootleggers Brewery from Fullerton, Cismontane Brewing Company from Rancho Santa Margarita, Golden Road Brewing from …

Thirsty Bear: Tapas and craft beer

A couple weeks ago I went up to San Francisco to attend Ad Tech and the Marketers Ball. As I only went up for the day, I did not have a room to go to while killing time between the two events; I had a parking spot and there was no sense moving, so I called Tanya and had her do a search for a micro brewery that might be within walking distance. After a few minutes she came up with the Thirsty Bear, which happened to be just a couple of blocks away from where I was at the …

Photos from Tanya’s move

When I left Europe, I headed back to Indiana for the last phase of my journey. If you will recall, this all started with Buddy and me taking a train from Los Angeles to Chicago. Now, I was going to finish packing Tanya’s trailer, take some photos of the inside of the house, put up a For Sale sign and drive back to California. Tanya was coming to stay. These photos include stops at Billy Barooz Pub & Grill in Champaign, IL; Shamrock, TX; Chama River Brewing Company in Albuquerque, NM and Flagstaff Brewing Company in Flagstaff, AZ along with …

Another visit to Solvang

Last year, I introduced Tanya to Solvang, CA. Solvang is known as Denmark west due to its large Danish population. It is a quaint little town in the Santa Ynez Valley. It is a very nice ride or drive, either by car or motorcycle. Besides lots of touristy things, it is the home of my favorite winery, Sort This Out Cellars [STOC]. After a visit to STOC we found a nice hotel down the street to leave Buddy at, then we headed over to the Solvang Brewing Company. Solvang Brewing Company is fairly new and I guess we got there …

Photos from Southeast Utah

When we originally laid out our planned road trip, Tanya said she wanted to go back to Arches National Park. We had gone there last year, but she suffered a failure on her external hard drive that resulted in the loss of many of her photos. Since this trip was for her birthday and it was on the way anyhow, it was decided we would stay in Moab, UT for the night and go to Arches the next day. We got a very nice room at the La Quinta and it happened to have a microbrewery right across the street. …
