Hot Sünner Nights at Select Beer

These photos were taken Wednesday evening, June 20, the first day of summer at Select Beer in Redondo Beach. To celebrate the Summer Solstice, Select Beer brought out the Sünner Kölsch, the classic beer of Cologne, Germany. After a couple tastes of it, there is no doubt it is a summer beer as it is very light. Probably tasty after chopping down trees in the Black Forest. I know the store was packed, and it was obvious most were there for the Sunner Kolsch.

After sampling the Sünner Kölsch we opted for something a little more stout and enjoyed the company of other like-minded beer drinkers. Speaking of like-minded beer drinkers, we are starting a new networking group for business owners in the South Bay. It is called Business & Beer and unlike the other business networking groups that have mandatory meetings, dues and occur before work or during lunch, we have none of that. The networking events will occur every Thursday at 6:00 PM and go on until 7:00 PM. Of course, if you are enjoying yourself you are more than welcome to stay later. Each week we will go to a different microbrewery, brewpub or gastropub in the South Bay area. The common denominator will be that they serve craft beer on tap and are a local business. Our first planned event will be at Select Beer Store in Redondo Beach on July 12. It looks like Abigaile in Hermosa Beach will be on the 19th. Stay tuned for more information. Following me on Facebook will ensure you always hear first. I hope lots of you can join us. Continue reading

American Craft Beer Week: 1321 Taproom and Hudson House

Day three of the 7th Annual American Craft Beer Week found us at 1321 Downtown Taproom in Torrance and Hudson House in Redondo Beach. It has been a year since my first visit to 1321 Taproom and my first visit to Hudson House. Actually, I never heard of Hudson House prior to yesterday, so this search for different craft beers is definitely introducing me to new places in the South Bay.

We started off at 1321 Downtown Taproom because they serve flights and we were not planning on dining. It turns out that was a good plan since they apparently had a power outage earlier and the food menu was rather limited. The first time I went to 1321 they offered three different pre-defined flights; today they let you chose the four brews you want to try. If you ask, your server should be able to create one for you. Yesterday, Christine helped us and came up with a great flight of American craft brews that I had yet to try: Scrimshaw, Dale’s Pale Ale, Rose’s Hips and Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti. Tanya, being a dark beer fan opted for the Old Chub. It was a great start to day three. Continue reading

American Craft Beer Week: Naja’s Place Redondo Beach

It is American Craft Beer Week and I have decided to try and find as many American craft beers as possible in the South Bay. I started my search at Naja’s Place on the International Boardwalk on the Redondo Beach Pier. Tanya has been taken off the Methotrexate that has prevented her from enjoying a nice beer, she is going to be able to join me on this adventure. Since Naja’s Place has 88 beers on tap, it seemed like the best place to start. Unfortunately, Naja’s does not offer flights, but the bartender, Kara, was kind enough to provide short pours so we could try a few different brews. Tanya started off with a Knee Deep Tanilla Porter and I had the Hangar 24 Double IPA. We then moved on to a Black Phoenix for Tanya and a Ballast Point Tongue Buckler.

The food selection at Naja’s is not really our style so we took a stroll down the Boardwalk towards the pier and ended up at El Torito for a little dinner and to take a few photos of the pier and marina. We then went back to Naja’s for a final tasting; this time Tanya had a Firestone Velvet Merlin and I had the Firestone 15th IPA. All of the brews were very nice and I have to thank Kara for her suggestions for Tanya; it was obvious that Tanya really enjoyed the beers she had, especially the Black Phoenix. Continue reading
