Rock & Brews

1st Annual Rocktoberfest at LA Live, benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project

Back in April, when I made my first visit to Rock & Brews, I was walking around checking out the artwork decorating the place, I could not but help notice among all the rock and roll images was a lone banner on the center of the main wall. On it was the image of one soldier carrying another, obviously wounded soldier, with the words, “Wounded Warrior Project” below. Upon closer inspection I could see that it had been signed by many people from different branches of the armed forces. I made a mental note to investigate the Wounded Warrior Project and see if there was some way I could get involved.

Last weekend, while at BAM Fest, I saw that Rock & Brews had a booth and they were using it to promote an upcoming event; Rocktoberfest at LA Live, with a fund raising event kicking it off to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. I went over to talk to them about it and after an email or two it was decided that GotBaddog.com would photograph their opening night, Charity Gala, this Monday, October 15 at LA Live. Day three of the 2012 LA Beer Week

So, this is the 4th Annual LA Beer Week, which runs from September 20-30. Yes, our “Beer Week” is 11 days long. I am not sure if we get overtime or not. I have not made a concerted effort to participate in all the festivities but it seems that I will be to some degree. It was not planned, but Day One of LA Beer Week happen to be on a Thursday, which means we had a Business & Beer meetup at The Brewery at Abigaile. Friday, or Day Two of Beer Week was spent at Oktoberfest at Alpine Village. Saturday had a few events going on, but I had things to do earlier in the day and did not think I needed an entire day of drinking. As it turns out, a good friend from up north dropped in so we all decided to go to dinner.

I knew that El Segundo Brewing Co was re-releasing their Two 5 Left Double IPA and I wanted to try that. I also knew that we could just walk across the street and go to Rock & Brews. You may recall that I went there once before and I left there less than impressed. The other night, one of our Business & Beer attendees assured me that Rock & Brews had changed significantly and that I should try them again. All I can say is that I will not be going there again. Luckily, they were having a Rocktoberfest shindig with games going on, so I was able to get some photos. Continue reading

Rock and Brews, El Segundo

A couple of weeks ago, my buddy Phil told me about a new restaurant in El Segundo that had 50 beers on tap, so it did not take much convincing to get me to head over to Rock & Brews last Saturday to check it out. Rock & Brews is partially owned by Gene Simmons, so it was a safe bet that with the combination of rock and roll and 50 beers on tap this was going to be a pleasurable experience.

The weather was so-so, but we wanted to go for a bike ride and I figured it would be easier to find parking with motorcycles than with a full-sized car. As it turns out, Rock & Brews has plenty of off-street parking, which was a pleasant surprise. The building of the restaurant itself reminds me of an auto repair garage. I was told it was supposed to resemble being backstage at a concert venue. All I can say is that I must be getting asked backstage at the wrong places. Rock & Brews was bigger than some venues I have attended. That being said, when it is open it only has three walls as the north side opens into a large patio. While this is not a problem when the weather is nice, it will be interesting to see what it is like when the weather is foul. Continue reading
