Beachwood BBQ & Brewing One Year Anniversary Party

These photos were taken Saturday at the Beachwood BBQ & Brewing One Year Anniversary Celebration, which was held at their Long Beach location on E. 3rd Street in Long Beach, CA. You might recall that I made my first visit to Beachwood Brewing a couple weeks ago. During that visit we were impressed enough with their home brews that we brought a growler of Mandarin Dream home with us, with the intent of returning for the one year celebration. It was a good idea.

I remember being impressed that Beachwood was only one year old, yet had nine different brews available. That is a lot for a young operation. When we returned yesterday they had a few new batches I had not tried; either my timing was outstanding or their brewmaster, Julian, has really got this thing down.

One of the nice things about the local brewing companies is how well the brewers get along with each other. Even though Beachwood brews an unknown number of different beers they do not have a problem providing brews from all the locals; their one year anniversary was billed as a tribute to Southern California breweries and it really was with offerings from numerous local brewers including Strand, Monkish, Alesmith, Alpine, El Segundo, Stone, Eagle Rock and at least a dozen others. I think on my next visit I am going to have to experiment with some of the breweries I am unfamiliar with. Yeah, there are a couple out there. Continue reading

Tasting Allagash Brewing at The Rockefeller

Last night The Rockefeller in Hermosa Beach had a beer tasting featuring Allagash Brewing, from Portland, ME. Allagash specializes in Belgian style brews and I had tried their Allagash White on draught and really enjoyed it, so I did not hesitate in accepting the invitation to try five more of their brews. The downside was that the beers were brought in bottles, which [in my personal opinion] is never as good as on tap. Storing the bottles on ice just made the beer colder than I would have preferred, but the glasses were small and my hands are warm so it did not take too long for me to warm it up to a temperature I enjoyed.

Lou, the distributor hosting the tasting, did not bring the Allagash White with him because The Rockefeller sells it on tap. I think he may have been there more for his account that for introducing us to the various Allagash brews. We sampled, in this order, the Allagash Tripel, Dubbel, Curieux, Four and Black. I think I liked the Black best although the Curieux was very nice. It is aged on old Jim Beam barrels for four weeks and you can really taste the bourbon from sitting in the kegs.

The Rockefeller is located in Hermosa Beach on Pier Avenue and will be the location of our August 9 get together of Business & Beer. Any business owners in the South Bay area that are interested in networking with other business owners while enjoying a nice American craft beer is encouraged to join us. There are no dues or rules, just business and beer. Continue reading

Neal Bracewell Insurance, ribbon cutting

The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) welcomed a new business to Torrance with a ribbon cutting today, Neal Bracewell, State Farm Insurance. This is the first ribbon cutting I attended that was not held at the end of the business day and it is Monday, a couple days before the 4th of July. I fully expected the event to be a little less well-attended than usual, but it was actually quite the opposite; the place was packed. It was pretty clear that Neal has a lot of family and friends supporting his new venture and that combined with the support of his local Chamber of Commerce should ensure (no pun intended) that he will be quite successful. Continue reading
