Is it Spring yet?

The almanac says spring does not begin this year until March 20; but with the weather we have been having around here, you could have surprised me. It was almost summer-like around here over the weekend. Since Tanya’s RA/RAD has not been bothering her lately, she has wanted to take advantage of the great weather and the lack of pain by spending more time outside. Sunday we took another trip to the South Coast Botanic Garden on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Palos Verdes Estates. The South Coast Botanic Garden is 87 acres of trees, flowers, birds, lizards, squirrels and …

A visit to Craft Brewing Co and Claremont Craft Ales

I am usually the one trying to get someone to go for a bike ride and coming up with the destinations, so when my friend Phil asked me if I wanted to join him for a ride out to Chino I said yes and searched Google for a microbrewery in the area. When I woke up Saturday, I knew it was going to be a great day for a ride as it was already 70 at 9:00 AM. Since the person Phil wanted to visit in Chino was not home yet, we decided to visit some mutual friends in Lake …

When asteroids strike

When you wake up to the fact that asteroids are hitting the planet and people are being harmed, it kind of puts a weird slant on the day. On the upside, the asteroid did not hit anywhere close to me and it was a magnificent summer day in the middle of February. Tanya suggested I take a bike ride up to Point Vicente and try to shoot some whales, which sounded like a great idea . . ., but things happened, Point Vicente did not. After a couple detours I headed out to the Manhattan Beach because there were sightings …

Rheumatoid Awareness Day – Coming out of the shadows

Saturday was Groundhog Day and it was the first annual Rheumatoid Awareness Day; for patients with Rheumatoid Disease, previously known as Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) or Rheumatoid Autoimmune Disease (RAD). February 2 was picked as Rheumatoid Awareness Day because just as Punxsutawney Phil pokes his head out of his burrow to see if his shadow is visible or not, Rheumatoid Awareness Day was started in the hopes of getting the truth about this disease to the masses and to help bring it out of the shadows. Groundhog Day has long been a favorite day of mine, beginning back in the 70’s …

El Segundo Brewing Bottle Release Party

These photos are from the El Segundo Brewing Company (ESBC) Bottle Release Party which was held Friday night, February 1. The Bottle Release Party was to celebrate the two brews they are now providing in 22oz bottles, their ever popular White Dog Wheat IPA and their new Stand Crude Imperial Stout. A Facebook status update that went out a couple hours before the event started stated that it would be their “biggest shindig yet;” I don’t think they knew just how big of a shindig this was going to be. They opened at 5:00 and when we arrived around 5:30 …

Simi, Smell Me, Taste Me Sunday

These photos were taken Sunday at Enegren Brewing Company in Moorpark, CA and Lab Brewing Company in Agoura Hills, CA. A few days ago I was at El Segundo Brewing Company and was introduced to Joe Nascenzi, one of the owners of Enegren Brewing Co., a microbrewery in Moorpark, CA. After talking with him for a while, and hearing what kind of beers they were brewing over there, I knew that I had to head out there with Tanya. While I am a definite hophead, Tanya is more into saisons, porters and stouts. When Joe told me about their oatmeal …

Schooner at Sunset, Sunset Beach

These photos were taken Saturday at a new gastropub, Schooner at Sunset, which is located at 16821 Pacific Coast Highway, Sunset Beach, CA. For those not sure where Sunset Beach is, it is the very north end of Huntington Beach, just south of Seal Beach. Your car’s GPS is most likely going to call it Huntington Beach, so don’t worry, it is all the same place. To be honest, I am not really in the habit of going down there unless I am taking a weekend motorcycle ride down the coast. The fact of the matter is, when I initially …

Business & Beer at Brewco, Manhattan Beach

These photos are from our Business & Beer gathering at Brewco, a gastropub in Manhattan Beach, CA. Brewco was initially opened about 20 years ago as Manhattan Beach Brewing Company. From what I can tell, they stopped brewing beer on location sometime in 2009 at which point it re-opened as Brewco. Brewco offers about 50 beers on tap, with most of them being craft beers from around the world. They also offer several bottled craft beers and frequently have hard to find brews available. This was the first time that we brought Business & Beer to this location and it …

Easyriders Bike Show 2013 – Anaheim

These photos are from the 2013 Easyriders Bike Show held at the Anaheim Convention Center on January 5, 2013. The Easyriders Bike Show Tour is put on by Easyriders Events and travels to numerous locations around the country. It features 100’s of custom show and street bikes of every genre. It is always a visual treat; even if it is difficult to focus in all that chrome. I made it there a little earlier today than last year, when I got there a couple hours before it ended, so there were a lot more people to get in the way …
