Ribbon cutting at Smog City Brewing Company

Smog City Officially Welcomed to Torrance

On Friday afternoon several members of the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC), Torrance City Council member Bill Sutherland and a representative from Assembly member Al Muratsuchi’s office joined several dozen fans of Smog City Brewing Company at their newly opened microbrewery and tasting room for an official welcome to Torrance and the Chamber of Commerce. It was just a few weeks ago that Torrance Mayor Scotto cited craft beer as a new growth industry for Torrance so everyone was out in force to show their support for that idea.

Smog City introduced a new beer to their tap list, Third Nipple Tripel, and had some snacks out for the dignitaries and offered pints for $1.00 off during the event. Owner/brewmaster [Jon] Porter was even seen giving some private tours explaining the brewing process and the difference between their horizontal lagering tanks and the more common vertical ones. Everyone seemed to be having a good time. You can see all my photos from the Smog City ribbon cutting on CraftBeerGuy.com.

Personal tour of the S.S. Lane Victory

These photos are of the S.S. Lane Victory which is located at Berth 46 in the Port of Los Angeles at San Pedro, CA. A couple of weeks ago, Tanya and I were at a regional Chamber of Commerce mixer and I won a raffle prize of tickets for two to receive the President’s Tour of the ship as well as lunch in the Officer’s Mess. It was actually the one thing I wanted to win. Anyway, this morning we met with Anthony Broude, the current President at U.S. Merchant Marine Veterans of World War II, and he gave us a personal tour of the Lane Victory from the bridge to the engine room and everything in-between. We had a great time and I learned that the difference between the Officer’s Mess and the Crew’s Mess would be tablecloths.

The S.S. Lane Victory was built in 1944 at Terminal Island, which is right around the corner from where she currently sits. She launched in 1945 for World War II. After the war she was decommissioned until 1950 when she was recommissioned for the Korean Conflict. One of the highlights of her time in Korea was when she rescued more than 7,000 Korean men, women and children and safely transported them from North Korea to South Korea. In 1953 she was decommissioned once again only to be recommissioned in 1966 for service in Vietnam. After four years there she was decommissioned on last time in 1970. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan conveyed the Lane Victory to the Merchant Marine; and on December 14, 1991 the S.S. Lane Victory was designated a National Historic Landmark. Continue reading

2012 Chamber Holiday Regional Mixer at Rolling Hills Country Club

These photos are from the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce Holiday Regional Mixer which was held last night, December 4, at the Rolling Hills Country Club in Rolling Hills Estates, CA. This was our second time attending the holiday regional mixer and I have to say, it is one of my favorite events of the year as far as the Chamber of Commerce is concerned. There was plenty of networking opportunities available with Chamber members representing Carson, El Segundo, Gardena Valley, Harbor City/Harbor Gateway, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Lawndale, LAX Coastal Area, Lomita, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Peninsula, Redondo Beach, San Pedro, Torrance and Wilmington included in the mix. These events have more people than you can ever interact with, but when you keep seeing the same faces at different functions eventually you will talk if there is any chance of doing business together.

The Rolling Hills Country Club is a nice venue and while it is a private club they are available for special functions. In addition to the networking opportunities there was a D.J., a magician, hors d’oeuvres and door prizes. We contributed a certificate for a free beer at an upcoming Business & Beer event and I won a tour of the S.S. Lane Victory. I am looking forward to that and taking more photos to share here.
